Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is the brief and intermittent occlusion of arterial and venous blood flow using a tourniquet while at rest or exercising. This reduces oxygen flowing to your muscles, stimulating an anaerobic exercise response. Using this technique, you can exercise using significantly less resistance or intensity and still achieve gains in muscle strength and size.
Who can Benefit:
Those who are bed-ridden, casted/braced, pre/post-op, elderly, athletic population…
How does BFR work?
BFR will reduce oxygen to create an anaerobic response
BFR cuffs prevent any lactate from transferring from the muscle to the liver, which forces the body to switch from an aerobic to anaerobic system.
Ask your Physical Therapist if this is right for you, or come in and see Julie Holt, ATC for a few visits to try it out.
